Accomplishments of Save The Tiger Fund 1995-2006

Tiger in Bhutan (c) Sonam Wang

We have awarded 300 grants totaling US $15 million, partnering with 70 different organizations in 13 Asian countries to save wild tigers. We have acted as a catalyst and a convener, taking a multi-faceted approach to tiger conservation, providing flexible grants to tackle unique problems in diverse cultural and regional settings accross the tigers' range.

Tigers

  • Acquired 2.2 million hectares of prime habitat for tiger conservation in Myanmar and Russia.
  • Stabilized tiger populations in the Russian Far East at 450 individuals.
  • Restored 5,700 hectares of degraded land to establish corridors between fragmented tiger habitat patches in Nepal.
  • Confiscated parts of 200 tigers in law-enforcement busts world-wide. Rescued 6 live tigers from poachers.

Science

  • Published 100 peer-reviewed books or scientific papers on tiger conservation and ecology.
  • Disseminated results of projects through over 760 popular articles in newspapers and magazines around the world.
  • Sponsored 12 international conferences attended by 1000 tiger experts.

People

  • Educated 230,000 school children in Asia about tiger conservation and 4,300 teachers incorporated sustainable environmental practices into their curricula.
  •  Educated 500 Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors about alternatives to tiger bone medicines.
  • Trained 2000 reserve staff, anti-poaching personnel and local conservation leaders.
  • Constructed 500 methane gas digesters to reduce demand for firewood in tiger habitats.
  • Resolved 150 episodes of human-tiger conflict through specialized human-tiger conflict response teams that council people who have lost their domestic animals and relocate or scare persistent problem tigers away from human settlements.
  • Led a global coalition of over 35 NGO's in the Campaign Against Tiger Trafficking (CATT) to stop the illegal trade in tiger products.
