A fresh look at the issues

ReleaseWatching people react to Francesca Owens' art is always rewarding, because people cannot help but react. The subject matter usually reveals itself to the viewer incrementally beginning with a monochromatic design that is initially friendly on the eye and pleasing composition, stimulating that ‘oh would make a nice bead-spread sort of smile’. Then when people work out that the pleasant design in front of them is actually tiger bursting to freedom from the back of a land rover, or the two halves of butchered tiger, intense emotions are aroused ranging from incredulousness, amazement to revulsion, anger or sorrow.

Francesca Owens developed her new traveling exhibit Did I Die In Vain? using the key messages of the Campaign Against Tiger Trafficking. Her aim was to contribute to tiger conservation by shedding new light on the problems with the illegal trafficking of tiger parts, and to share her discovery of this nefarious world with others.

“This series was an emotional and difficult one for me to create,” explains Owens. “Most of my art has focused on the beauty and brilliant colors of animals like these. It was devastating to think about the brutal treatment of these beautiful creatures and each piece left me drained, but happy to know that I could do some good in raising awareness of the brutality.”

The exhibit is currently showing at the Reed Photo-Art Gallery in Denver Colorado www.reedphotoart.com and its combined space with the John Fielder Gallery (open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

In addition to the Save the Tiger Fund and Reed Photo-Art Galley, other sponsors of the Tiger Facing Extinction exhibition include: A&A Art FramingCOLA (Colorado Lawyers for the Arts), Faegre & Benson LLP and Anderson & Associates Public Relations, Inc.
