Kids at Luce Elementary Help Save Tigers!
For the sixth year in a
row, Luce Elementary School in Indiana has raised money to help save
tigers. This year the kids were able to raise $1,000! They sold pencils,
tiger paw tattoos, and T-shirts each morning before school, raffled a
custom-made birdhouse and added a wet sponge toss to their
annual school festival - where for a small fee, kids got to throw a
wet sponge at their favorite tiger teacher!
The kids donated $565.00 to the "Save The Tiger" fund and $200.00 to
the Wildlife Conservation Society's Amur Tiger Project. The remaining
money was used to enhance the Amur tiger habitat area that they have
created on the school grounds. This educational area includes a cave
with a library of tiger books, and places for kids to sit and read. The
habitat area also includes a variety of trees native to Amur tiger
habitat, including Amur River maples, Amur boxwoods, a Korean pine and
Russian Cedars.
As a result of the
school's active conservation work, American Electric Power awarded Luce
Elementary 1,500.00 to purchase a bronze educational marker with details
about the Amur Tiger and an outdoor bulletin board that will be updated
monthly with the latest tiger conservation news.
Over the past six years, Luce Elementary has contributed over $3,100
towards tiger conservation! We congratulate the students and faculty on
this fantastic achievement.
The Unversity of Mizzouri also has a tiger program - check out their
website here.
Save The Tiger Fund has some limited quantities of tiger teacheing
kits, mousepads and posters to support teachers wanting to include tiger
conservation at thei schools. Contact
us and let us know what you will be doing at your school.
