Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Restoration Fund
Purpose
The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Restoration Fund is a partnership
between the U.S.D.A. Forest Service and the National Fish and Wildlife
Foundation. This partnership will provide grants for projects that
benefit the restoration of the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
Specifically, the fund seeks projects that will:
- Strengthen the link between local communities and the Midewin
National Tallgrass Prairie.
- Encourage innovative, locally-based programs or projects that
protect or restore important habitats and/or improve water quality
within the Midewin watershed.
- Provide opportunities for environmental education and
stewardship.
Project Area
Grants from this fund are limited to projects that will work on
the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie or will have direct benefit to
Midewin. This includes the portion of Will County, IL constituting the
Midewin watershed, including the watersheds of: Prairie Creek, Grant
Creek, Jackson Creek and Jordan Creek.
Focus
The fund supports restoration and education projects on the
Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Specific areas of interest
include:
- Wetland conservation and restoration
- Native plant community restoration
- Conservation education - with a particular emphasis on projects that
provide opportunities for environmental education through an outdoor
classroom experience and participation in stewardship activities
Preference will be given to projects that: 1) demonstrate measurable
ecological or environmental benefits 2) include education, training, and
public outreach in the scope of the project 3) build new or enhance
existing partnerships.
