Kids from Down Under to the Land of Lincoln Help Save Wild Tigers
Learn about then things that kids can do
to save
tigers.
AUSTRALIA
Students from Brompton Primary School in Adelaide,
South Australia, recently raised $400 for wild tiger conservation. After
attending a Zoo School and Sleepover event at Adelaide Zoo, the kids,
ranging from 7 to 9 years old, had the opportunity to discuss and get
involved for a full term in learning about the plight of tigers all over
the world. They were especially affected by the cruelty of tiger
poaching and habitat destruction, and have now pledged not to buy or use
any endangered animal products/medicines throughout their lives and to
advertise this fact to their fellow students and families through
newsletters, assemblies, talks, and letters to their local papers and
politicians. Most of the students come from underprivileged households
and represent a variety of backgrounds, including Aboriginal, Cambodian,
Bosnian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Greek, Italian, and Anglo
Australian. For them and their families, this was a big effort. They
held cake and ice-cream sales, and recycled plastic and carton
products.

Aman in his tiger costume
ILLINOIS
Aman has always been crazy about tigers. About a
year ago, when he found out that the number of tigers in the wild has
gone down significantly, he said he wanted to save them and wanted to
know how he could do it. When his parents suggested a ‘save the
tiger birthday party’ for his fourth birthday, where, in lieu of
gifts, his friends would make donations to Save the Tiger Fund, he was
on board right away and very excited. At the party, Aman wore his tiger
costume and invited all his friends to put on tiger costumes, face
paint, and masks. Guests were entertained by a storyteller who talked
about endangered animals and saving tigers, using a tiger and other
animal puppets as props. The storyteller had all the kids on the floor
doing various tiger imitations. Kids were treated to a tiger birthday
cake and the adults were quizzed on tiger trivia. Aman’s birthday
party/fundraiser raised over $500 for the Save the Tiger Fund. The
family sent paperless thank you cards to all.
